Several businesses in San Luis Obispo have reported being targeted by telemarketers through the website Greenbusinesscoalition.org Employers say the website adds businesses to a "green" business directory without their permission and charges about $50 per month to their phone bill. The Better Business Bureau has received complaints about the site but says businesses should be aware of negative marketing, where you must opt-out to stop all charges.
Green Initiatives, a telemarketer which handles calls for the Green Business Coalition, says it gives retailers a free 40 day trial. They then have to opt-out. A manager for the telemarketing company says her employees only speak to people who are authorized to make business purchases, but business owners say the telemarketers are speaking with their employees and pressuring them to join the directory.
