SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities have found a grenade on Interstate 5 in Orange County and have shut down the freeway in both directions.

California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Barnard said Friday that it was unclear whether the grenade in San Clemente was live or inert.

The Sheriff Department's bomb squad and Marines from Camp
Pendleton arrived on scene to investigate.

Barnard says the grenade was discovered about 11:15 a.m. and authorities closed the freeway about 15 minutes later.

Motorists are being diverted off the highway at Avenida Vista Hermosa. Traffic is backed up in both directions for at least five miles.
