Kayla Griffin scored 16 points, grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds and recorded 5 steals to lead the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a 69-50 win over San Diego in the the Mustangs' home opener on Saturday. Griffin scored ten points in the first half to help the Mustangs build a 37-22 halftime lead.
The Mustangs improved to 2-1 on the year after their second-straight win. San Diego dropped to 1-1.
Cal Poly's defense and fast-pace play forced the Toreros into 16 turnovers in the first half. USD finished with 26 in the game.
Nikol Allison added 11 points and 4 rebounds off the bench for Cal Poly. She made 5 of her 7 shots from the floor in 18 minutes of play. Brittany Woodard added 9 points and 6 rebounds. Righetti High graduate Molly Schlemer logged 14 minutes and had 4 points and 3 rebounds.
Cal Poly hit 29 of its 64 shots from the floor for a 45 percent clip. They made 5 of their 12 three-point shots, which was good for 42%. However, Cal poly struggled from the free throw line and shot 40 percent by making 6 of 15.
The Mustangs limited USD to 35 percent shooting and outrebounded the Toreros 41-40.
Ashley Curcio logged 20 minutes off the bench and finished with 6 points and 5 assists. Starting point guard Ariana Elegado, who scored a career-high 27 points earlier in the week in an upset win at Oregon State, missed the game to attend a wedding. Caroline Reeves, Griffin and Kristen Ale each dished our 4 assists.
As a team, Cal Poly totaled 15 steals and committed 22 turnovers.
The Mustangs lost at USD last season 69-52. The Toreros won 26 games last year and advanced into the Final Four at the WNIT.
Cal Poly returns to action Monday at California. Tip off is at 5 pm.
