When the Cal Poly football team plays at Fresno State on Saturday it will be a homecoming for senior defensive tackle Sullivan Grosz. Grosz went to San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno and had season tickets to Fresno State football games with his family for ten seasons.
'It's an honor, I've been going to that stadium forever and I'm just blessed for the opportunity" said Grosz who also played at Bulldog Stadium in 2010 when Fresno State beat Cal Poly, 38-17.
Grosz says he was recruited by Fresno State in High School but the head coach at the time (Pat Hill) stopped his pursuit of him when Grosz made it clear he wanted to leave Fresno. Grosz plays at the FCS level at Cal Poly which is a lower division than where Fresno State (FBS) plays but Mustangs head coach Tim Walsh says right now, Grosz could play for the Bulldogs.
"He could play football at any level. He's big, he's strong, he's fast, he's smart, he's a great leader, he's got great personality. He keeps things in perspective too. Not a lot of high's and low's with Sullivan and I think that that's a big thing in this game with how emotional it is, that's a great quality to have" said Walsh.
Grosz had two sacks in Cal Poly's season opening win against San Diego. He hasn't missed a game during his college career, starting the last 24. Grosz led the team in sacks as a sophomore with 6.5 and had a team best 6 last season as a junior. Grosz says he's a better player this year, more because of his mind than his body. "I'd like to think I'm a little smarter. I just kind of see the game a little differently. Compared to last year I try to study more film" said Grosz.
Junior Chris Lawrence plays next to Grosz on the defensive line and says Grosz has taught him how to be a student of the game.
"That's one thing I've learned a lot from him cause that was something that I was really never good at and didn't pay much attention to until this year and he forced me to do that. Watching film, breaking down opponents, noticing tendencies" said Lawrence.
Grosz is a team captain for a second year, he expects to have some familiar faces in the stands on Saturday, "my Dad, I'm sure he's got 150 people coming to his tailgate" said Grosz who was a second team Big Sky selection last year.
10th ranked Cal Poly (1-0) plays at Fresno State (1-0) at 7:00pm on Saturday night. The game can be viewed online on ESPN3.
