Group looking to take local veterans to their war memorials

A national group that sends veterans to Washington, DC to see their war memorial at no cost is working to help more people on the Central Coast.

Kern County's Honor Flight chapter is reaching out to serve veterans in San Luis Obispo.

Right now, they're looking for veterans, volunteers, and sponsors. Sponsored veterans receive a hero's send-off and guided tours of the many memorials in Washington, DC.

The group is currently focusing on World War II veterans. We spoke to a few today.

John Burke of Atascadero is among those excited about the possibility.

"I think it's fantastic," Burke said, "It's unbelievable. Only in the United States could this possibly happen."

Longtime Templeton resident Greg McGill is leading the charge locally. He's the San Luis Obispo Honor Flight Representative for Honor Flight Kern County. He says they are looking to fly about 15 to 20 veterans to Washington in April or May.

The group says it costs about $1,500 to sponsor each trip. To find out how you can help, click here.
