Last week a college student from China lost nearly $1,000 in a fraudulent scam just hours after landing in Santa Barbara. This week, the student was offered an anonymous $900 donation, but is opting to direct the money to charity.
Police released surveillance images last week of a man and woman believed to be responsible for the crime. The couple approached the 23-year-old student on August 11 and offered to help buy him a cell phone. The suspects collected $900 cash, promising the student they would deliver a cell phone.
Instead, the couple left the student at a gas station where he waited for two hours before law enforcement was called.
Police said a gorup of local citizens, called the San Ysidro Pharmacy Breakfast Boys, heard about the crime through media reports and decided to raise and donate $900 to the student. The student told police he was honored by the kindness of the local citizens, but requested that the money be donated to the American Red Cross. The student said this way the money could help orphans and homeless people.
Sheriff's Detectives are still investigating the crime. If anyone recognizes the couple or has any information that will help them solve the case, they are asked to call (805) 681-4150 or call the Sheriff's Anonymous Tip Line at (805) 681 - 4171.
