Grover Beach baby recovering at home after battling rare disease

A Grover Beach baby is back home from the hospital after battling a life threatening disease.

Five-month-old Michael Aguilar has infant botulism, in which bacteria grows within a baby's gastro-intestinal tract.

Risk factors include swallowing honey as a baby, being around contaminated soil, and having less than one stool per day for a period greater than 2 months.

Symptoms include trouble breathing, sagging eyelids, loss of muscle control, lethargy, loss of head control, paralysis that spreads downward, poor feeding and weak suckling, weak cry and respiratory failure.

After weeks in intensive care unit at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Michael is recovering.

The community is holding a fundraiser, May 10, at Me and Z's Mexican Restaurant in Grover Beach to help the family with expenses.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the restaurant, Calvary SLO Church on South Higuera Street and The Parable Christian Book Store in SLO.
