Grover Beach city council unanimously votes to appoint empty seat, avoiding $30,000 special election

Grover Beach city council is looking for its next member, and if you are a resident of the city, it could be you.
On Monday night, the council unanimously voted to appoint someone to the seat vacated by Phyllis Molner. Molner resigned unexpectedly last Thursday, saying she was moving to a home in a different city in San Luis Obispo County. Council members voted to open up the application process and solicit letters of interest to the public, instead of holding a special election, which would have cost approximately $30,000.
Sharon Brown, a 20-year resident of Grover Beach, said she was very happy with the council's decision.
"The people of Grover Beach have a right to the best that they can have," said Brown.
Council member Bill Nicolls suggested each member nominate a person, but the council eventually decided to open up the process up to the public. Council member Karen Bright motioned for a solicitation of letters of interest from Grover Beach residents, effective Tuesday.
Brown said, "This way, mayby somebody who wants to apply, who doesn't know a council member, or the council doesn't know them."
City Manager Bob Perrault told KSBY on Monday that he believed Molnar had left on good terms from city council. But at the meeting, Bright called Molnar's leave "disturbing".
The council will review the letters at a special meeting on February 25, and then someone will have to be appointed by April 1.
