The Guadalupe City Council has appointed Gary Hoving as Interim Director of Public Safety.
Hoving will be responsible for both the Guadalupe Police and Fire Departments.
He is filling the vacancy left open by Police Chief George Mitchell's recent retirement.
Hoving has served as a reserve police sergeant with the Guadalupe Police Department.
He also previously worked for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department for 29 years.
Hoving's name may sound familiar. In 2007, when he was a chief deputy with the Sheriff's Department, Hoving sued then-Sheriff Pat Hedges. Hoving accused Hedges of secretly taping a conversation between him and a sergeant. After a ten-month investigation, the State Attorney General decided not to press charges against Hedges. The county settled out of court with Hoving for $660,000. Hoving left the Sheriff's Department in 2008.
His interim position with the City of Guadalupe begins Monday, January 28.
City officials say they will continue to evaluate options to fill the position on a full-time basis.
