A team of volunteer crime-fighters could soon be roaming the streets of Santa Maria.

A new karate school in Orcutt wants to create a local chapter of the Guardian Angels, an international crime fighting group made up of volunteers. Members wear signature red berets and white t-shirts.

"I think it's a great idea. We have a lot of things that are going on and it's getting bad and we need all the looking out we can get from volunteers," said Ruben Peinado of Santa Maria.

If there's enough interest, the Guardian Angels will come to town and train local residents. Members do not carry weapons but travel in groups and report crime.
