9-1-1 patients who call with symptoms of a STEMI, or ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction, will be taken straight to French Hospital Medical Center.
Symptoms typically include pressure or squeezing pain under the breastbone; discomfort in the arms, back or jaw; shortness of breath; breaking out in a cold sweat; lightheadedness or fainting; and nausea and vomiting.
Before, patients were taken to the closest hospital and then transferred accordingly.
Quickly recognizing and treating a STEMI is critical to reducing heart damage.
The county said French Hospital worked hard to become a STEMI receiving center.
Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital also have this recognition.
