Gun ownership required

(WXIA) The city council in a small Georgia town, north of Atlanta, has unanimously approved an ordinance requiring gun ownership in each household.

The Nelson City Council voted five to nothing to require every city household to have a gun and ammunition.

"That doesn't mean that there's going to be somebody knocking at their door saying you have to have it," said Nelson City Council member, Edith Potillo.

Potillo says there a lot of exceptions.

"If you do not want to have a firearm, you don't have to have it," Potillo said.

She says the new ordinance is mostly a political statement that the city hopes will also enhance public safety, act as a deterrent to criminals, and reduce crime.

Nelson resident Lamar Kelly says the ordinance is a pointless political statement that won't do a thing to reduce crime.

"People who want a gun already have one probably. There has been no violent crime in Nelson in the past 10 years, so how are you going to improve on no violent crime?" said Kelly.

The ordinance takes effect in less than two weeks.

However, it contains no penalties and exempts anyone who objects, convicted felons, and those with certain mental and physical disabilities.
