SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities are swapping guns for groceries in San Diego.

People who turn in working guns between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday at Valencia Park will receive vouchers that can be redeemed at area grocery stores.

City News Service says shotguns and rifles are worth $50 each and a pistol or assault-type weapon can be exchanged for a $100 voucher.

The weapons will be accepted with no questions asked.

The "Guns for Gift Cards" program is sponsored by the Sheriff's Department and the United African American Ministerial Action Council.

It's a way of getting guns off the street. More than 850 guns have been collected and destroyed since the program began four years ago.
