The Hancock College football team dropped to 0-3 after a last second home loss to Golden West. The Bulldogs scored a touchdown with 16 seconds left to take a 21-20 lead but the Rustlers made a 52 yard field goal as time expired to win 23-21. Golden West, from Huntington Beach improves to 3-0.
Hancock was down 17-7 at the half before scoring a defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery by John Holmes in the endzone. Golden West kicked a field goal with 8:25 to play in the fourth quarter to go ahead 20-14.
With 16 seconds left the Bulldogs completed an eight play, 60 yard drive with an Anthony Maez four yard touchdown run to go ahead for the first time in the game, 21-20.
Golden West started the ensuing drive at its own 36 yard line with 12 seconds left. A 28 yard pass got them to the Hancock 36 yard line with two seconds left. Peter Marquez kicked a career best 52 yard field goal as time expired to keep the Rustler's undefeated and shock the Bulldogs.
Hancock quarterback Troy Prober was 4-9 passing for 64 yards with a touchdown and interception before leaving the game with an injury to his arm. The freshman from Righetti High School threw his lone touchdown pass to fellow freshman Ryan Mediano who is a St. Joseph High School graduate.
Hancock had 12 penalties for 119 yards while Golden West was flagged 13 times for 132 yards.
The Bulldogs will start Northern Conference play at Moorpark (2-1) next Saturday.
