Jordan Hasay will try to rekindle the magic of four years ago and former Cal Poly star Ben Bruce will try to become the third track and field athlete with ties to the Central Coast to earn a spot on the USA Olympics Team in Eugene, Oregon on Thursday.
The 29 year old Bruce is one of 14 men in the finals of the men's 3,000 m steeplechase. The former Big West Conference champion ran the second-fastest time in the qualifying round of 8:29.11.
His season-best time is 8:19.10.
After winning his qualifying heat at the 2008 Trials, Bruce finished 12th in the final.
Hasay runs in the first round of the women's 1,500 m run on Thursday afternoon. The 20 year old University of Oregon junior will look to repeat what happened at the 2008 Trials. The then-16-year-old Hasay set a national high school record of 4:14.50 in the semifinals to advance to the finals, where she finished 10th. Hasay qualified for the 2012 Trials with a personal-best time of 4:10.28.
The 1,500 semifinals are on Friday with the final on Sunday.
Templeton native Chaunte Lowe will try to make her third USA Olympics team in the women's high jump. The first round is Thursday with the final on Saturday. The 28 year old finished sixth at the 2008 Olympics. Lowe set the American record of 6 feet, 8.75 inches in 2010. This season her top jump is 6-7.5, which ranks #1 in the US and #2 in the world.
Lompoc native Duane Solomon (men's 800m) and Stephanie Brown Trafton (women's discus throw) have already earned spots on the US Olympics Team in the last week.
San Luis Obispo resident and Cal Poly graduate Sharon Day, as well as UCSB's Barbara Nwaba compete in the women's heptathlon on Friday and Saturday.
