Jordan Hasay returned home this week to the Central Coast for some well deserved rest and relaxation. After a sensational sophomore year at the University of Oregon, Jordan's already looking ahead to making an Olympic run next year.
The Mission Prep graduate was a six-time All-American her sophomore year for the Ducks. She won three Pac-10 Conference titles (cross country; 1,500 and 5,000 meter outdoor track), finished third at the NCAA cross country Championships, and captured two NCAA individual indoor track titles (mile and 3,000 meter). She also set personal best times in the 1,500 (4:10.28) and 5,000 meter (15:37.29) events during the outdoor season. Just last weekend, Hasay finished ninth at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"Overall it was a really good year. It was just hard to end on a bad note because it makes you think about that more," said Hasay, referring to her disappointing 4th and 8th place finishes at the NCAA Outdoor T&F Championships. "But when you really reflect on that it was definitely a good year."
Jordan has decided not to race in Europe this summer as previously planned. As for next year, Jordan says she will definitely redshirt one of the three collegiate seasons. However, she's not sure if it will be indoor track or cross country. The decision is designed to make sure she is in top form at the 2012 USA Olympic Trials.
"That's really why we're doing it is so that I wouldn't be as tired for the Trials," said Hasay, who admitted she was fatigued at the end of the outdoor track season from a doubling in two events. "Obviously I'll have to be really ready for the Trials in order to make the team. It's not like I kind just breeze through it and hopefully do well at the Olympics or something. But we definitely want to try to give it the best shot so we're really going to focus on that."
Hasay qualified for the women's 1,500 final at the 2008 USA Olympic Trials in Oregon when she was just 16 years old.
Hasay said she planned to run both the 1,500 and 5K next year as a junior for Oregon.
Last week, Jordan became the first sophomore ever to be named as a Capital One Academic All-American of the Year in any sport. Jordan was honored for women's track and field/cross country. The human physiology major said she received two A-pluses this past quarter so her cumulative GPA is now 4.02.
