Behind a combined 36 points from Mari Stewart and Megan Hattar, the Templeton girls basketball team made history with its first win over Arroyo Grande in recent memory. Templeton beat Arroyo Grande 54-45 on the opening night of the Perry Ford Holiday Tournament at Morro Bay High on Wednesday night.
It marked their first meeting since 2005 when AG beat Templeton 50-6.
Hattar led Templeton with 19 points, while Stewart finished with 17 and 12 rebounds. Marissa Torres added 9 points.
Arroyo Grande erased a 12 point third quarter deficit and pulled within three points in the fourth quarter. Templeton iced it by making 9 of its 13 free throws in the fourth quarter, including a 4-4 mark from Stewart.
Sophomore guard Olivia Galindo led AG with 17 points, while Krista St. Denis added 10 points and freshman forward Ashlyn Herlihy added 9 points before fouling out of the game.
AG dropped to 3-3, while Templeton improved to 4-1.
AG plays at SLO High on Thursday with a game against Garces at 6:30 pm. Templeton battles Elk Grove at 3:30 at Morro Bay High.
Mission Prep opened the tournament with a 56-40 loss to Pioneer Valley. The Panthers improved to 4-0 to start the season.
The four day tournament ends Saturday and features 18 teams. Mission, San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay High Schools will all host games this season.
