HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) Some Hayward City Council members are raising concerns about a planned gang injunction in the city.
Councilman Mark Salinas says that the proposed injunction could exacerbate what he sees as tension between the city's older citizens and its younger, multiethnic residents.
Councilman Francisco Zermeno says he wants to hear more about efforts to keep children from gangs. The Oakland Tribune reports that Salinas and Zermeno spoke at a meeting this week, where councilmembers were given an update about the injunction.
Authorities say the injunction, which would be the city's first, would improve safety by preventing gang members from carrying weapons and associating with each other.
It could be filed as soon as the end of the summer. Hayward officials say they are watching a legal challenge to a gang injunction in nearby Oakland for guidance.
