New research confirms heavy drinking can trigger mood disorders, which can be treated without anti-depressants.

The findings come from a 30 year study of 400 men who were tracked for both alcohol abuse and bouts with depression.

Almost one-third of the men's major depressive episodes were linked to heavy drinking and were likely to subside after a period of abstinence.

Experts encourage doctors to be aware of alcohol-related depression.
