Two athletes were rewarded on Monday for their eye-opening performances during the first Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable of the 2012-13 school year.
Valley Christian Academy quarterback Jed Hedlund took home the season's first Male Athlete of the Week Award. The senior threw for 205 yards and 7 touchdowns in VCA's win over Liberty Christian. He also rushed for 89 yards and had three interceptions at cornerback.
Hedlund was quick to share the award with his teammates. "Because of them I'm able to get as many yards and stuff as I do because they're just great receivers and the blocking of course. It's a small line, very small line, don't get me wrong, but they do a great job protecting me," said Hedlund. "I can honestly say I never thought I'd win won of this for football I'm only 130 pounds and more of a basketball player."
Allan Hancock College soccer coach Rob Cantrell accepted the Women's Athlete of the Week Award on behalf of his leading scorer Sierra Duarte. The sophomore scored 3 goals in a 20 minute stretch to lead the Bulldogs to a come-from-behind 4-1 win over the College of Sequoias last Friday. The game was played in 100 degree weather. Duarte graduated from Righetti High in 2011.
