High speed chase near SM School

A man with a criminal record led Santa Maria Police Officers on a high speed chase through the city on Friday.

Police say Sergio Benny Castro led them on a chase after they attempted to stop him during a traffic stop.

They say Castro threw a loaded handgun out of the window of his vehicle.

Castro eventually stopped and was taken into custody.

He faces several charges including: felon in possession of a handgun, felon in possession of ammunition, felony evading a peace officer, possession of a firearm near school grounds and violation of his probation.
