Highway 154 crash victim was cousin of teen killed by distracted driver in 2009, sources say

KSBY News is learning more about the man killed in Wednesday's crash on Highway 154.

Michael Okerblom, 31, from Nipomo died in the two-vehicle crash.

The driver of the other vehicle had minor injuries.

Sources tell KSBY News Michael is a cousin of former St. Joseph High School student Eric Okerblom, who, at the age of 19, was riding his bike in July 2009 when he was hit and killed by a distracted teenage driver, who had been texting and driving.

CHP investigators say, at this point, they do not know if drugs, alcohol or weather conditions played a role in Wednesday's crash, which closed Highway 154 for a couple of hours.

Eric Okerblom's parents, Bob and Eliene, have been big advocates on the Central Coast against distracted driving.

They created the Eric Okerblom Foundation in memory of their son.
