Cal Poly freshman Laura Hollander won the 5,000 meters at the Big West Track and Field Championships by nearly 50 seconds. The 18 year old led from start to finish and set a meet record with a time of 16:25.62. Junior Daniella Moreno from UCSB was second with a time of 17:14.74. Cal Poly freshman Rachel Bush was third, crossing in 17:42.80. The time for Hollander was 32 seconds off her personal best time in the 5,000 meters, she ran 15:53 at Mt.SAC. Hollander won the Big West Cross Country Championship in the fall before finishing ninth at the national meet.
The Cal Poly women's team finished sixth overall. UC Davis won the team championship followed by UCSB.
The Cal Poly men were third overall behind Long Beach State and UCSB. The highlight of the day for the men's team came when Cal Poly swept the top three positions in the 5,000 meters. One day removed from winning the 10,000 meters, junior Chris Frias came back and won the 5,000 in a time of 14:48.71. Junior Blake Ahrold was second with a time of 14:49.89 after finishing second in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday with fellow junior Sean Davidson placing third with a time of 14:53.08. Davidson finished second in the 10,000 on Friday.
The Cal Poly teams will next compete at the NCAA Preliminary Round (Regional) in Austin, Texas, May 23-25.
