Cal Poly freshman Laura Hollander was named Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Week after setting a conference record in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays last Friday.
In her spring debut Hollander finished the 5,000 in 15:53.73, good for third in her section of the Olympic Development Elite Division. She competed against professional runners.
The time was just short of the Cal Poly school record of 15:50.40 set by Amy Harper in 1983, before the Mustangs were in the Big West. Hollander moves ahead of UCSB's Amanda Moreno as the Big West record holder in the event. Moreno ran a 15:58.02 for the Gauchos in 2011.
In cross country, Hollander finished first at the Big West meet and ninth in the country this past fall. She was named Big West Women's Athlete of the Year and Big West Women's Freshman of the Year.
