Spencer Howard delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Templeton High baseball team to a thrilling 6-5 come-from-behind win over Lompoc in a Los Padres League showdown on Friday.
The two teams shared the LPL title last season. Templeton improved to 5-0 in league and 12-1 overall. Lompoc dropped to 4-1 in league.
The Braves scored twice in the first and two more in the second to take a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Eagles rallied for 3 runs in the third, one of which scored on a RBI single from Michael Frigon. The Eagles evened it 4-4 in the fifth when Mitchell Pendley crushed one by the diving Lompoc right fielder and to the wall allowing Spencer Walsh to score. Pendley, who's nickname is Moose, finished with a stand-up triple.
Lompoc regained the lead in the sixth when Trent Howell broke for third on a pitch in the dirt and the catcher's throw ended up in left field. Howell trotted home on the error as Lompoc regained the lead 5-4. The Eagles answered with a rally in the bottom half capped by a game-tying single from Tyrus Yamagata.
The game was tied into the bottom of the seventh when Howard singled with one out and the bases loaded. Howard finished with 3 hits, including 2 doubles. He also threw 5 2/3 innings. Pendley came in to relieve Howard and earned the win with 1 1/3 shutout innings. He left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh with a strikeout.
Yamagata went 2 for 4 for the Eagles.
Jordan Pickles led the Braves offensively and was 4 for 4 at the plate.
