Hundreds of local high schoolers pledge to drive safely

Some high school seniors are learning that it literally pays off to drive safely.

Local graduating seniors pledged to not drive while impaired or distracted as part of the "All In Driver Program" put on by McCarthy's and Coast Hills Federal Credit Union.

On Saturday, the program recognized 13 graduates as the winners of the program.

The winners received defensive driving school courses, savings bonds worth $500, and the grand prize winner, Elmer Barrueta, got a 2005 Mini Cooper.

Barrueta says the pledge hits close to home.

"Just recently, my friend passed away due to a person that was driving under the influence, and well, she's greatly missed," Barrueta said.

This is the 13th year that the program has been put on.

Organizers say over 1400 local high schoolers from 13 different schools have signed the pledge.
