Freshmen Jordan Ellis and Brian Mundell, as well as senior Denver Chavez had three hits apiece to back sophomore Matt Imhof in the Mustangs 7-1 win over UC Davis on Friday night in Baggett Stadium. The Mustangs are 2-0 in Big West play and 19-6 overall. They can complete a three-game Big West opening series sweep on Saturday at 1 pm.
The Aggies fell to 0-2 in conference and 10-14 overall.
Imhof threw his first collegiate complete game. He scattered 7 hits and 3 walks in the nine innings. The sophomore left-hander struck out 5 to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Mustangs provided all the run support Imhof needed in the third inning. Ellis cracked a double to left-center to score Elliot Stewart with the first run of the game. Jimmy Allen followed with a RBI groundout to plate Chavez.
Cal Poly made it a 3-0 game in the fifth inning when Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to allow Peter Van Gansen to tag up and score all the way from second base.
The Aggies scored their lone run of the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but the Mustangs answered with two runs in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. David Armendariz singled to left center to score Mundell, and Tommy Pluschkell followed with a double down the left field line to plate Armendariz.
After Imhof retired the Aggies in the seventh, Mundell clubbed a two-run triple to deep right center to score Ellis and Allen and cap the scoring for the game.
Mundell was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and a triple. Ellis was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and Chavez was 3 for 5.
Nick Torres went 0 for 4 to snap his 17 game hitting streak.
