Isla Vista man faces several charges after arrest

Santa Barbara police arrested a man Sunday after they say he got into a fight with his estranged wife's boyfriend.

Jose Bernal, 36, of Isla Vista, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a destructive device, and possession of a destructive device near a public place or private home.

Police say, during a fight on the 600 block of San Pascual Street, Bernal stabbed the victim in the chest with a piece of bamboo that had a three-inch piece of metal attached to the end.

When officers took Bernal into custody, they say they found an improvised fire bomb in his car. They say it was made with batteries, wiring, a roll of toilet paper, and a butane lighter.
