Students and parents at La Canada Elementary School will see more than new classes and teachers on the first day of school on Wednesday. There will be a new parking lot and traffic pattern to help improve the safety for students and motorist.
The school is located on a congested intersection during school hours, the Lompoc Unified School District teamed up with the city to re-engineer the lay out of the school parking lot. The entrances and exits have been changed, a dedicated cross walk has been added and a there is now a designated pick-up, drop-off location.
"The intent behind the redesign is to improve student and pedestrian safety while providing an efficient and safe method for cars to enter and exit the school," says Sheldon Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. This projects funding used a combination of Measure N, local facilities bond and state deferred maintenance dollars.
On Wednesday, Lompoc Police and school and city officials will be observing the traffic and students patterns during the first couple of days
