After a poor first half the Cal Poly football team dominated the 2nd half to beat Humboldt State 23-17 in the opener for both teams. Humboldt State is a division two team.
Quarterback Tony Smith connected on 6 of 12 passes for 39 yards
and a touchdown but it was his 48-yard rushing touchdown late in the third quarter that put the Mustangs on top for good.
Slotback Mark Rodgers ran for 106 yards and a touchdown
on 14-carries and pulled down Smith's scoring pass in the second quarter.
The Lumberjacks were up 17-7 at halftime thanks to an
8-yard pass from Mike Proulx to Dirk Dallas late in the first quarter, a 40-yard field goal by Matt Bruder in the second and a 29-yard fumble recovery and run by Jonathan Faraimo just before the break.
After coming back in the second half, the Mustangs topped of
f their victory with a safety by James Chen with about eight minutes left.
