Two Central Coast track and field athletes, who finished runner-up at the CIF State Championships, are headed to Indiana for Junior Nationals and a spot on Team USA. The meet takes place at the Robert C Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Indiana and features the top athletes from across the nation 19 years old and younger.
Arroyo Grande High senior-to-be Madison Jacobs will compete in the women's discus final. Jacobs qualified for Junior Nationals with her personal-best throw of 155 feet, 9 inches at the CIF State Meet. Jacobs finished second in state by one inch.
Jacobs has been busy the last few weeks in and out of the practice ring. She held two bake sales and collected donations to pay for the trip to Indiana. The Branch Street Deli in Arroyo Grande also donated a portion of its sales last Saturday to Jacobs.
"We didn't think we were going to go. But then I pushed it toward my coaches a little bit because I really thought it'd be a really cool experience. So I'm happy I made all the money to make it there. It's exciting and I can't wait," said Jacobs on Tuesday at practice.
The discus final is Friday.
Recent Templeton High graduate Savannah Camacho is entered in the women's 800 meter race. The first round is Friday and the final is Saturday.
Camacho is coming off a runner-up finish at State for the third-straight year. The Oklahoma State recruit's top time of the season of 2:07.81 ranks fourth in the field.
The top finishers in each event qualify for a spot on Team USA for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain that run from July 10-15.
