LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles County sheriff's captain who ran Men's Central Jail denies fostering a culture of deputy brutality.

Capt. Daniel Cruz was placed on leave last year because of mounting allegations of excessive force at the jailhouse.

Speaking publicly for the first time, Cruz tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/NH5Xdn ) that abuse allegations are untrue.

The denial comes days after another captain, Michael Bornman, testified before a county commission examining brutality allegations that Cruz protected deputies accused of excessive force.

Bornman says Cruz's managing style, in part, blocked dozens of investigations into force and misconduct cases.

Cruz says he was just shaking his head over the statements, adding he's anxious to defend his leadership, possibly before the commission.
