Local Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee officially has some competition in the race to fill the 15th District Senate Seat.
The seat was left vacant when Abel Maldonado became the state's new Lieutenant Governor. On Monday, former Assemblyman and Democrat John Laird officially threw his hat into the ring. Blakeslee announced his candidacy last Friday.
A special primary election will be held June 22, followed by a special general election August 17.
The 15th District covers southern Silicon Valley, portions of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, all of San Luis Obispo County and a part of northern Santa Barbara County.
