Judge awards molestation victim $10K restitution

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - A judge has ordered a convicted child molester to pay $10,000 to the family of his victim for emotional suffering in a rare award for psychological damages from a criminal court.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported that the judge on Friday ordered 47-year-old Arnold Luz to make the payment under a state law that allows special restitution for child molestation victims.

Luz, who was convicted of sexual molestation and is on probation, declined comment.

The award was unusual because restitution in criminal cases is commonly confined to paying for expenses associated with the case.

But California law provides payments for child-sex victims, allowing judges to put a price on trauma.

Luz was arrested after acknowledging having phone sex multiple times with the 13-year-old girl.
