The Junior Lifeguard Program is coming to Oceano Dunes this summer.
The summer program provides water safety education for chilrdren and teens. The program is also designed to improve their understanding and respect for the environment as well as themselves.
Tryouts will be held Saturday, May 4 at Paul Nelson Aquatic Center in Santa Maria and May 11 at Arroyo Grande High School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Each new participant must demonstrate a continuous 100-yard swim in less than two and a half minutes, treading water for three minutes and a 10-yard underwater swim.
Those who pass will be able to participate in summer activities such as open-water swimming, body surfing, body boarding, skin diving and self-rescue.
