Eating lots of junk food could be worse for you health than a lard-based, high-fat diet.
Researchers at UNC Chapel Hill fed rats one of two diets: a diet full of animal fat, or a "cafeteria junk-food" diet made up of cookies, chips and chocolate.
They found the junk food diet increased inflammation and changed the chemicals the body makes when it processes food to more dangerous compounds.
These changes lead to conditions like insulin resistance, stroke and metabolic syndrome.
Txperts say studies in humans are needed.
