Jury deliberating penalty in Biela case

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A jury in Reno is back at work trying to decide whether to sentence convicted killer and rapist James Biela to death.

The same 12 jurors that convicted the 28-year-old pipe fitter of the 2008 murder of Brianna Denison last week is considering the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Denison's mother, Bridgette, told them on Tuesday they should show no mercy for the man who raped and killed her 19-year-old daughter after sexually assaulting two other college coeds near the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno.

They resumed deliberations about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday after about three hours behind closed doors the night before in Washoe District Court.

It's been nearly 10 years since a jury in Washoe County
considered but voted against the death penalty.
