Jury finds man guilty of elder abuse and assault

Santa Barbara County District Attorney, Joyce E. Dudley, says a jury found 48-year-old Douglas John Stekkinger guilty of elder abuse, assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily injury, and battery with serious bodily injury Thursday.

Stekkinger was also convicted of personally inflicting great bodily injury on someone age 70 or older.

According to reports, Stekkinger brought his dog to a meeting at the Veteran's Memorial Building in April of 2012. A 71-year-old put his hand on Stekkinger's shoulder and tried to tell him that dogs aren't allowed in the building during meetings. Stekkinger violently punched the 71-year-old in the face, shattering his cheekbone in three places.

Stekkinger has been convicted of two strikes, and he faces up to nine years in state prison.
