Two men in their early 20s were rescued Friday evening after falling out of their kayaks because of strong off shore winds.
It happened around 6:30 p.m. about an eighth mile south of the Hollister Ranch Gate, near the Gaviota Coast. The Santa Barbara County Fire Department sent emergency crews, including a helicopter with rescue swimmers.
When emergency crews arrived on scene they found two kayakers trying to swim back to shore. Conditions Friday evening were particularly difficult because of the strong off-shore winds. Crews sent a rescue swimmer into the water from the helicopter, and were able to hoist the kayakers to safety.
They were ultimately taken to Cottage Hospital, where they are being treated for hypothermia. A spokesperon for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department said one of them has quite significant hypothermia.
The original call indicated that three kayakers were in distress, however when emergency crews arrived they found that it was just two.
