For the first time a popular lake in Santa Barbara County is opening its waters to canoes and kayaks.

Friday was the first day kayaks and canoes could cruise Lake Cachuma. A spokesperson for Santa Barbara County Parks says he's hoping the change will expand the lake's recreational opportunities, while generating a bit of revenue for the county.

"We had probably a dozen kayaks ready to roll at our launch, they were knocking down the door at 7:00 a.m. when we open," said Sherman Hansen of Santa Barbara County Parks. "We also noticed that the rental shops right away were renting kayaks as the event kicked off."

It costs just $5 to launch and annual passes are available. All kayaks and canoes must be inspected for quagga mussels and other aquatic species before they hit the water.
