Central Coast native Tim Kennedy thought he had a fight lined up with UFC great Vitor Belfort. He and UFC President Dana White both said it was in the works but Kennedy confirmed on his Twitter account the fight was dead. "The fight against @vitorbelfort never materialized. I want to thank @danawhite and @lorenzofertitta it was an honor to be considered" wrote Kennedy on Twitter.
It's believed the Brazilian, Belfort who has a 23-10 mixed martial arts professional record only wants to move down to the middle weight division if it's for a championship fight. Kennedy, who grew up in Atascadero and is 16-4 as a professional has turned his attention to another Brazilian great Wanderlei Silva. Kennedy told the online publication, Bleacher Report, "I'd love to fight anybody with a rich history within the sport that's been a fighter for a long time. To get matched up with Wanderlei Silva, an iconic hero of mine, that's the kind of fight I want."
Silva is trying to get back into the middle weight title picture and so the fight could make sense for him as well.
Kennedy won his UFC debut on July 7 at UFC 162 with a unanimous decision against Roger Gracie. He told KSBY that he wants to win the Middleweight championship but knows he needs to improve his resume before he can get a title shot. "I can't call out the champ right now. I have to win a couple more fights but he's definitely on my radar. If you're in the sport and you don't want to fight the champ, you shouldn't be in the sport. So I want to fight the champ I just know I'm not in the position to call out the champ yet, I need a couple more wins" said Kennedy. The Middleweight Champion is Chris Weidman but he has a rematch with Anderson Silva in December. Weidman beat Silva for the title at UFC 162.
Kennedy is an Army Sergeant First Class and served multiple tours of duty overseas. The 33 year old now lives in Austin, Texas but still has family on the Central Coast.
