LA area fire kills 2 people, injures 6

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say two people are dead from an Encino apartment fire that also left a firefighter and five other people hospitalized.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says more than 100 firefighters fought the blaze that was reported about 9 p.m. Thursday.

When crews responded, a unit in the three-story building was in flames, but firefighters managed to squelch the blaze in about an hour.

The department says in a release that an elderly male and female were killed. Smoke inhalation is the likely cause but an official cause of death will be determined by the coroner.

Five other civilians required hospitalization. A firefighter was treated for a hand injury and listed in fair condition.

No names were immediately released.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
