LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County is restoring a cross to its official seal, nearly a decade after removal of a cross included in the original design.
The Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 on Tuesday to add a cross to the top of historic San Gabriel Mission as depicted on the seal.
When the seal was redesigned in 2004, a cross on it was removed under threat of legal action by the ACLU of Southern California. An image of the mission was added to the design but at the time it didn't have a cross because it was undergoing earthquake retrofitting.
The cross was reattached to the historic building in 2009. Recently, Supervisors Michael Antonovich and Don Knabe filed a motion to add the cross on the basis of historical accuracy.
