LOS ANGELES (AP) The nation's second-largest school district is delaying its early-start plan to begin classes in mid-August.

The Los Angeles Unified School District board decided on Dec. 14 to change the summer start to Aug. 15 instead of the first day of classes after Labor Day. The earlier calendar was designed to allow students to complete final exams before the winter break.

But Superintendent Ramon Cortines says in a news release early Wednesday that early-start will not take place as planned this summer and most traditional schools will continue to open in September.

Cortines says there are concerns about another round of devastating budget cuts and a delay will give parents and employees more time to plan for the new calendar.
