LA voters to decide on sales tax hike to 9.5%

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles city officials have voted to put a measure on the ballot that would raise sales tax by a half-cent to avert significant cuts in services.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/XydS6d ) the city council voted 11-4 Tuesday in favor of asking voters to decide the tax hike that would give Los Angeles one of the highest rates in the state, 9.5 cents on every dollar.
The proposed hike is intended to avoid $215 million in budget cuts.
Former Mayor Richard Riordan opposes the measure, saying it will fall hardest on the poor who are already struggling. Labor union leaders also oppose the increase.
Police Chief Charlie Beck supports the increase, saying cuts could bring up to 500 officer layoffs.
