Four Lady Cougars scored 15 or more points to help the Cuesta College women's basketball team win the championship at its 29th annual Phillips 66 Classic. The Cougars upset Sierra College 86-75 in the title game on Saturday.
The Cougars improved to 5-1 under head coach Ron Barba and won the title for the first time since 2001 and fifth time in tournament history.
Freshman Miriam Zabinksy led the Cougars with 27 points, including an 11 for 14 clip at the free throw line. As a team, Cuesta made 28 of its 39 free throw attempts.
Morro Bay High graduate Aria Johnson and Atascadero High graduate Alyssa Palma each scored 15 points. Johnson was named the tournament MVP after averaging 17 points and 14 rebounds in the three-day tournament. Zabinsky was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Freshman guard Courtney Chadwick added 18 points.
The Cuesta women won their fifth-straight game.
