Loaded with a crop of fresh faces, the Mission Prep girls basketball team opened the season with a 41-39 win over visiting Bishop Diego on Wednesday night.
The Royals pulled down 20 offensive rebounds, eight of them went to Noelle Laird. The freshman finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Mission Prep.
Connor Storlie, a junior, added 15 points.
Led by head coach John Krossa, the Royals are coming off a stellar 32-2 season that included a CIF-Southern Section Division title and runner-up finish in the CIF State Tournament. The Royals lost four seniors from that team including Bri Harvey, Jenna Dunbar and Kaylee Williams. The dynamic trio combined to average 40 points per game last year.
Former NBA great Horace Grant has joined Krossa's bench this season as an assistant coach.
