The Cuesta College men's water polo team opened its quest for a third-straight Western State Conference title with an 8-5 victory over Ventura on Wednesday.
The Cougars led 3-2 at the half. Freshman Lukas Lastra scored twice in the third quarter to help Cuesta take a 5-4 advantage into the final period.
Lastra, a Santa Ynez High graduate, led the Cougars with 3 goals. Paso Robles High graduate Spencer Silva scored once for Cuesta.
Georan Meendering and Matt Giancanelli scored 2 goals apiece for the Cougars.
Freshman goalie Brady Moore, a Dos Pueblos High graduate, made 17 saves in the cage for Cuesta.
Cuesta improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in conference,The Cuesta women's team lost 14-3 in its opener to Ventura. The Cougars trailed 5-0 at the half and 11-2 after three periods. Haylie Fry, Shanae Lauridsen and Kortney Yoder scored one goal apiece for Cuesta. The Cougars dropped to 7-6 on the season and 0-1 in WSC play.
The women host the 14th annual Rabobank Tournament this Friday and Saturday. The Cougars open the event with #1 Golden West at 10:10 am and #5 Foothill, who are both undefeated.
