Mariners rally for three in the eighth for 3-1 win
SEATTLE (AP) Adam Moore's broken-bat RBI single highlighted a three-run rally in the eighth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night.
The Mariners were trailing 1-0 when they faced reliever Kevin Jepsen (2-4), who took over for starter Dan Haren. Jepsen walked Russell Branyan with one out. Matt Tuiasosopo (too-ee-AH'-so-SO'-poh) pinch ran for him.
Jose Lopez followed with a single and Casey Kotchman walked. Michael Saunders hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Tuiasosopo. Moore followed with his looping game-winner just over the reach of second baseman Howard Kendrick.
Josh Wilson followed with an RBI single to score Kotchman.
Neither team could manage much offense against starters Felix Hernandez and Haren.
,Yankees beat A's 9-3 to take over first place in American League East
NEW YORK (AP) Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR'-uh) hit a three-run homer and Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher also went deep for the Yankees, who beat up on Oakland again in a 9-3 win over the Athletics on Tuesday night.
The victory moved the Yankees back into sole possession of first place. Tampa Bay and New York had spent eight days tied atop the American League East.
The Yankees jumped on A's starter Vin Mazzaro right away. Brett Gardner led off the first with a single, and the Yankees scored three runs in the inning, helped by second baseman Mark Ellis's fielding error and Jorge Posada's (HOR'-hay poh-SAH'-dah's) triple.
Yankees starter Phil Hughes (16-6) walked five but only gave up two runs and four hits in five innings.
,Diamondbacks hand Padres 6th consecutive loss, 7-4
PHOENIX (AP) Miguel Montero drove in the go-ahead runs with a ground-rule double, and Gerardo Parra made two critical defensive plays and hit a two-run single, as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Diego 7-4 Tuesday night.
The Diamondbacks handed the National League West-leading Padres their sixth loss in a row.
The Padres led 3-2 to start the fifth inning. Parra stole a hit from Miguel Tejada (tay-HAH'-dah) with a diving catch near the right-field foul line, then ended the inning by bringing in a deep fly ball from Adrian Gonzalez at the wall.
In the bottom half, the Diamondbacks batted around. San Diego's failure to turn a double play on Rusty Ryal's sharp grounder to third put runners at the corners with one out.
After a walk, Chris Young tied the game with an RBI single.
,Chris Young allows 1 run on 2 hits in rehab start
RENO, Nev. (AP) Padres right-hander Chris Young allowed one run and two hits in three innings of a rehab start for Triple-A Portland against Reno on Tuesday night.
The 6-foot-10 Young struck out one, throwing 31 pitches, 24 for strikes.
The only run came on a solo home run by Tony Abreu (uh-BRAY'-oo) in the first inning, the second batter he faced. Young also allowed a single in the first inning to Cole Gillespie before recording the final two outs.
He retired the side in order in the second and third innings.
Young made one start this season before going on the disabled list April 12 with a strained shoulder.
He had arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder a year ago.
,Andres Torres' homer leads Giants to 5-2 win over Rockies
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Andres Torres led off the eighth inning with a go-ahead home run, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 on Tuesday night.
The Giants moved within four games of the National League West-leading San Diego Padres.
Buster Posey added a two-run double as the Giants won for the second time in six games. Freddy Sanchez had two hits and scored twice.
Melvin Mora hit a home run and Clint Barmes drove (BAR'-mehs) in a run for the Rockies, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Jeremy Affeldt (4-3) blew his second consecutive save but earned his second win in a row after pitching the eighth. Colorado's Matt Belisle (BELL'-eye-ul) (6-5) gave up a run in his third consecutive appearance after not allowing a run in his previous 14.
Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 37th save.
,Phillies beat Dodgers 8-4 on pair of 3-run homers
LOS ANGELES (AP) Brian Schneider and Ryan Howard each hit a three-run homer to power the Philadelphia Phillies past the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 on Tuesday night, keeping them three games behind first-place Atlanta in the National League East.
The Phillies' lead over San Francisco in the wild-card race remained 1 games, while the Dodgers fell 6 back with their third loss in four games.
Kyle Kendrick (9-7) allowed four runs and seven hits in five-plus innings, walked one and failed to record a strikeout for the first time this season.
,Frank McCourt takes stand in divorce trial
LOS ANGELES (AP) Frank McCourt has testified in his divorce trial that a now-contested postnuptial agreement was his wife's idea to protect her assets from his creditors.
McCourt took the stand late Tuesday and mostly recalled his conversations during the weeks before he and his wife, Jamie -- the former Dodgers CEO -- signed the agreement in March 2004.
The validity of the pact is at the center of the 11-day trial in which a judge could decide whether McCourt has to share ownership of the Dodgers. Jamie McCourt filed for divorce last fall after nearly 30 years of marriage.
Frank McCourt contends the pact gives him sole ownership of the Dodgers, the stadium and the surrounding property.
Jamie McCourt believes the agreement should be thrown out and those assets should be split evenly under California's community property law.
,49ers hope to carry preseason momentum into opener
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) Frank Gore believes this season will be different, that his San Francisco 49ers are finally ready to take that step to the playoffs after all the missed chances in an 8-8 season a year ago.
The Niners are unbeaten in the preseason heading into their exhibition finale at home Thursday night against the San Diego Chargers. And while everybody knows these games don't count, San Francisco could use some momentum heading into its season opener at NFC West rival Seattle on Sept. 12.
Gore is eager to see the entire offense intact. Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis has yet to play because of a strained right knee.
Second-year receiver Michael Crabtree is nursing a neck injury and also hasn't played.
,Raiders still trying to shore up run defense
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) Fixing a porous run defense has been one of the top priorities for the Oakland Raiders leading up to this season.
An 89-yard touchdown run by Chicago's Matt Forte and a 49-yard run by San Francisco's Frank Gore in the past two exhibition games show the Raiders still have plenty of work to do.
Oakland has allowed 135 yards rushing per game and 5.1 yards per carry in the preseason with some of the biggest plays coming against the first-team defense.
Coach Tom Cable says shoring up the tackling is one of the biggest things he's looking for Thursday night in the exhibition finale against the Seattle Seahawks.
,Merriman taking it slow in return from injury
SAN DIEGO (AP) San Diego Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman won't play in Thursday night's exhibition finale at San Francisco due to an Achilles' tendon injury.
And there's no guarantee he'll play in the season opener Sept. 13 at Kansas City.
Merriman knows the team is better served with him fully healthy than playing with a hindrance, so he's not going to just jump back into the lineup.
Coach Norv Turner says the Chargers are taking it slow with Merriman. They don't want the ailment to nag during the season, as foot and groin problems did in 2009.
Also Tuesday, the Chargers released defensive lineman Ryon Bingham to make room on the roster after claiming cornerback Fred Bennett off waivers from the Houston Texans.
,With camp over, USC hopes health holds in Hawaii
LOS ANGELES (AP) After one last preseason workout at Southern California, the Trojans have headed to Hawaii.
And it isn't for a restful vacation, no matter how much they need it.
The Trojans realize reinforcements for their depleted program aren't arriving any time soon, so their fate rests in their ability to stay on the field through every bump and bruise.
For example, coach Lane Kiffin finally has his preferred offensive line together just a few days before the 14th-ranked Trojans open at Aloha Stadium on Thursday night.
Kiffin says he ran a lighter camp after realizing he couldn't afford many injuries on a team fighting through significant scholarship cuts and several transfers by reserve players following crippling NCAA sanctions.
,Wide receiver Shaquelle Evans to transfer from Notre Dame
(Stations: Note California interest.)
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Sophomore wide receiver Shaquelle Evans has left Notre Dame's football team and will transfer to another school.
Irish coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday that Evans didn't give him a specific reason for wanting to leave. He says Evans didn't see himself "fitting in the offense."
Evans was one of the fastest receivers on the team. He caught seven passes for 61 yards last season as a freshman.
The former Inglewood (Calif.) High star was behind other receivers on the team's depth chart.
Kelly says Evans will be granted his release so he can transfer to a school of his choice.
,Electronic Arts brings "Madden" to Facebook
NEW YORK (AP) Electronic Arts is bringing its popular "Madden" football game to Facebook.
"Madden NFL Superstars" launched as a free application Tuesday.
The game lets players create fantasy teams and compete against other players on Facebook.
Electronic Arts Inc. plans to make money from the game by letting players pay nominal amounts of money for better players and other game content. Those microtransactions are expected to add up.
"NFL Superstars" was created by EA Sports and Playfish, the social game company EA bought last year for $275 million.
,Manny Pacquiao: Antonio Margarito knew what was in hand wraps
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) Manny Pacquiao (PAK'-ee-ow) believes in giving a second chance to disgraced boxer Antonio Margarito, his next opponent.
Pacquiao has more trouble believing Margarito didn't know about his illegal hand wraps before a fight nearly two years ago, and boxing's pound-for-pound champion wants somebody watching Margarito before they meet.
The Philippines' new congressman kicked off the media tour for his Nov. 13 bout at Cowboys Stadium with a friendly meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Tuesday.
Despite the arguments of Bob Arum, who promotes both fighters, Pacquiao says there's no way Margarito wouldn't know what was on his hands.
Pacquiao says he wants a representative observing Margarito's hand wraps before their meeting in Texas.
