SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Lawmakers are proposing to strengthen political ethics and reform campaign finance laws after a series of scandals tarnished the capital's reputation.
The proposals come as three Democratic state senators are suspended. Two were arrested on corruption charges and another was convicted for lying about living in his district.
SCA17 by Senate leader Darrell Steinberg would amend the state constitution to allow for suspension without pay.
SB1101 by Democratic Senator Alex Padilla of Los Angeles would ban fundraising in the last 100 days of a legislative session. Other bills by Padilla and Steinberg include SB1102 and SB1442, which would require quicker reporting of campaign donations.
AB1673 by Democratic Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia of Bell Gardens would ban all fundraisers at lobbyists' homes. SB1443 by Steinberg would prohibit all gifts from lobbyists.
